One of the most beautiful cathedrals in the city of Quito, La Basílica del Voto Nacional, is an impressive infrastructure of neo-Gothic style is considered the largest in Latin America that began its construction in the year 1887.
A curious fact is that many people donated money, materials and labor in exchange for eternalizing their names on the stones of this Basilica.
Finally, 100 years later, on July 12, 1988, it was officially inaugurated.
Due to its size and style, it is frequently compared to St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York and Notre Dam Cathedral in Paris.
Originally it was planned to place gargoyles but since only condors can fly at this point it was decided to make that change. The condor is the National bird of Ecuador.
The gargoyles were also replaced with the local fauna of Ecuador in replacement of mythological beings as is common in Europe.
