Mitad del Mundo, and the real equator

Ecuador's most photographed line is not the equator. It is about 240 metres south of it. And the famous demonstration where water spirals one way on one side and the other way three steps away is, we are sorry to report, a trick. Go anyway — the true story behind this place is considerably better than the one you will be sold.

The story nobody tells you, which is the good one

In 1736 a French expedition arrived in what was then the Viceroyalty of Peru with an argument to settle. Newton had proposed that the Earth was not a perfect sphere but slightly flattened at the poles; others insisted the opposite. The only way to know was to measure the length of a degree of latitude at the equator and compare it with a measurement taken near the Arctic.

The mission, led by Charles-Marie de La Condamine, spent the better part of a decade doing this in the Andes, in conditions that killed several of its members. They proved Newton right. And the measurements they and their contemporaries produced fed directly into the definition of a new universal unit of length — the metre.

That is what the monument commemorates: not a photo opportunity, but one of the great feats of eighteenth-century science, carried out on these hillsides. The country is named after the line they came to measure.

Why the monument is in the wrong place

La Condamine's team were extraordinarily good. They were also working with theodolites, chains and stars, two and a half centuries before satellites.

The 30-metre monument you see today was built between 1979 and 1982 on the position established by that historical work. When GPS became available, it turned out the actual line of zero latitude runs roughly 240 metres to the north. That is a remarkably small error for the method and the era, and it is why nobody sensible mocks the mission for it.

The yellow line painted across the plaza, in other words, is a monument to a measurement rather than the measurement itself. Stand on it anyway. Everyone does.

The Intiñán museum and the "true" line

A few hundred metres up the road, the Museo Intiñán sits close to where GPS puts zero latitude, and markets itself accordingly. It is small, privately run, entertaining, and staffed by guides who are genuinely good company. Entry is a few dollars, separate from the main complex.

Two honest caveats. First, "the true line" is less precise than it sounds: the equator is an abstraction, the Earth wobbles slightly on its axis, and different survey methods put the line in slightly different places. Second, the demonstrations.

About the water

You will be shown a basin that drains clockwise on one side of the line, anticlockwise on the other, and straight down on the line itself. It is beautifully done and it is not physics.

The Coriolis effect is real, but it acts on enormous rotating systems — hurricanes, ocean currents — over hours and hundreds of kilometres. In a bucket it is overwhelmed thousands of times over by how the water was poured, the shape of the basin, and any residual swirl. And at the equator the Coriolis effect is precisely zero, which makes a demonstration of it there doubly impossible.

The same goes for balancing an egg on a nail head, which you can do in your kitchen with enough patience, and for being "weaker" on the line, which is a matter of leverage and how you are asked to hold your arms.

None of this is a scandal. It is a magic show performed with charm, and knowing how a trick works has never stopped anyone enjoying one. Just do not fly home and repeat it as fact.

So is it worth going?

Our honest answer: yes, if you have three nights or more; probably not if you have two.

What you get is a pleasant half day, a photograph that people at home will recognise, a small ethnographic museum inside the monument that is better than it needs to be, and — if you go looking for it — a genuinely moving piece of scientific history. What you spend is four to five hours including travel.

Go for Pululahua instead, or as well

Fifteen minutes further up the road is the Pululahua Geobotanical Reserve: a volcanic crater roughly three kilometres across with farms and families living on its floor. It is one of very few inhabited craters in the world, and there is a viewpoint on the rim where you look straight down into it.

It is spectacular, it is free or nearly so, and on most days there are almost no tourists there. Go in the morning — cloud fills the crater by late morning and you will see nothing at all.

Combining the two makes the trip north genuinely worthwhile rather than merely a photograph.

Getting there

  • Bus — from Terminal La Ofelia in northern Quito, around fifty cents, 70 to 90 minutes. Cheap, easy, slow.
  • Taxi or ride-hailing — 45 to 60 minutes each way. Ask the driver to wait, or arrange a return.
  • Organised half-day tour — the simplest option and usually the one that also includes Pululahua and the Intiñán museum.

Entrance to the monument complex varies with what you want to include — walking the plaza costs less than the full ticket with access up the monument and the museums inside. The Intiñán museum charges separately. Bring cash in small bills, and check current prices at the gate rather than trusting any website, including this one.

Practical notes

  • Go in the morning. Clear skies until about eleven, and on a good day you can see Cotopaxi from up there. Afternoons cloud over and the crater disappears.
  • It sits at about 2,400 m — lower than Quito. This is a gentle outing altitude-wise and fine on an early day.
  • Sun. You are standing on the equator, on an open plaza, at altitude. Hat and sunscreen, even under cloud.
  • Two to four hours on site for both the monument and Intiñán, plus travel.
  • It is a complex, not a village — a purpose-built plaza with shops and restaurants. Set your expectations accordingly.

If you want the actual line, precisely

Bring your phone. Any GPS app will show you your latitude to several decimal places, and walking north from the monument until it reads 0°00'00" is a satisfying thing to do and costs nothing.

There is also the Quitsato sundial, further north near Cayambe: a large stone monument built on the surveyed line, with a serious astronomical and archaeological focus and none of the theatre. Far fewer visitors. Worth knowing about if the science is what interests you.
